A complete redesign makes the 2007 Hyundai Elantra slightly wider and taller than before, resulting in more interior space and a higher seating position. And while it has exterior measurements similar to other compacts, it's classified as a mid-size car according to the U.S. EPA. Its trunk capacity of 14.2 cubic feet is also among the best in its class. A 138-horsepower, 2.0L four-cylinder engine powers all Elantras, paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The engine has variable valve timing for responsiveness and efficiency; fuel economy rates up to 28 city, 36 highway. The ultra-clean PZEV version, available in California and a few other states at no additional charge, produces 130 horsepower and is only offered with the automatic. The Elantra has a four-wheel independent suspension, with MacPherson struts in front and a multi-link setup with twin-tube shocks in back, along with stabilizer bars both in front and back for responsive handling. Six air bags are standard on all Elantras, including front seat-mounted side air bags and full-length side-curtain air bags protecting all four outward occupants. Front-seat active head restraints and four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD) are also standard across the line. Elantra is offered in three different trims, GLS, SE, and Limited. In addition to the safety equipment, the GLS has standard power windows and locks, remote entry, tilt steering, and a split-folding rear seat, while the sporty-themed SE adds 16-inch alloy wheels, a trip computer, a telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, air conditioning, and cruise control. The more luxurious Limited model brings leather seats and trim inside, heated front seats, fog lamps, and a more powerful, six-speaker sound system with input jack. Several option packages can bring more luxury to the base GLS, and heated seats, offered for the first time on the Elantra this year, can be added to the GLS and SE trims. On the Limited there's a Sun and Sound package available, which includes a power sunroof along with an even higher power, 220-watt premium audio system with six-disc changer, cassette player, and external amp. Midway through the 2007 model year, XM satellite radio was made standard with SE and Limited trims.
